The cover was what caught my attention at first but the story was what pulled me through the end. Rules is about a 12-year-old girl named Catherine who just want to live a “normal” life like everyone else. But she feels that is nearly impossible since she has a younger brother who has autism and her whole family has to help him with his disability. So, during her extra time, she makes up rules to teach her brother, David, from misbehaving in public. Some of her rules for David are: “ No toys in the fish tank.” and “ Keep your pants on in public.” After meeting a new friend, Jason, and Kristi, a next-door neighbor they change her point of view of what normal really is. The author does a great job describing the perspective of a 12-year-old girl who goes through obstacles trying to live a normal life but discovers that not everything’s perfect or has to be. I would recommend this book to young teens because it is moving, realistic, and you can learn from it.
