Persepolis
by Marjane Satrapi
Astounding artwork + perfect dialog and story! This is what comics should all be like!
I just recently finished the graphic novel book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. This book features the daily life events of a girl living in pre and post-revolutionary Iran. The novel captures her growth through her mindset and inspirations while growing up. Upon close reading, the readers and audience gain a better grasp and understanding of both the main character’s life, family, and culture. I found this novel both emotionally and intellectually intriguing with her multiple plays on words as well as the various instances of symbolism within the graphic panels. Even though there are multiple lessons incorporated into the novel, the primary message that Marjane had intended the book to represent was the goal to provide audiences such as “westerners” who understand an alternative perspective and point of view. A lot of the time, Iranians get misunderstood because of the false and negative media that surrounds the stereotype. Aside from having one of the most touching and engaging plot storylines, the powerful messages incorporated into her daily life give inspiration to those that may be relating to her. Just the glances at the panels and the use of monochrome within the whole book allow the audiences to appreciate the meaning of the events and book rather than solely paying attention to the artistic feature. In doing so, it brings out so much more attention to the messages that the book has to offer.
