Komi Can't Communicate, Volume 3
by Tomohito Oda
Add this to your holds list – everyone will be talking about it when the movie comes out next year!
Sometimes the quality of a manga deteriorates after the first volume. However, Komi Can't Communicate is far from that kind of manga. The premise is unique, following the daily struggles of Komi, who has a communication disorder that makes speaking to others a cause of great anxiety. Since she does not speak to others, she has no friends. In this volume, Komi has already decided to make friends with the help of her fellow classmate Tadano. She has no problems with being well-liked because of her beauty and exceptional skill in everything she does, but she is unaware of this, which results in some comical juxtapositions between how she perceives her awkward self and how the people around her put her on a pedestal. Komi has already shown remarkable growth in social situations. She even went to a crowded swimming pool with several friends and enjoyed it! I love seeing Komi grow more comfortable with her friends such that she can truly enjoy herself around them. The author does a fine job of showing how Komi has succeeded in making friends while also acknowledging the moments when she still has trouble communicating and falls into an anxious spiral. It is realistic, and relatable, how Komi's journey is portrayed as both rewarding and taxing.
