Jacob's grandfather has always told him fantastic stories of people with amazing powers, Peculiars, he calls them. Jacob never believed them until the day he saw one of the creatures from his grandpa's stories, a Hollow. It sets him on a journey to a remote island that all the stories are centered around. He finds an old abandoned house, where his grandfather claimed the Peculiars lived, and as he begins to explore it, he discovers that the Peculiars are not only real, they may be still alive.

As a realistic fiction fanatic, I didn't thoroughly enjoy this novel. It's a cross between fantasy, mystery, and thriller. I have to say that Ransom Riggs's first publication wasn't a favorite for me. But if you enjoy creepy children being locked up, this is great for you. Also suggested: Impulse by Ellen Hopkins
