CIP 6006 - Erickson Trunk Sewer Upsizing (5th St - Allen Blvd), CWS R110

Status: Current project

Project Category: Sanitary

Project Estimated Cost: $1,218,800

Project Description

Phase 1 of the Erickson Trunk Sewer Project consists of replacing 1,560 feet of 15-inch pipe with 18-inch pipe from Cypress and 10th St. to Allen Blvd/Dale Ave. Alternate alignments will not require significant reconstruction of service lines but utilize the existing system for local collection. The upsized line will provide additional flow capacity.

Project Schedule

FY16-17: CWS installed flow monitoring on the trunk sewer to verify the need for this project. Data showed the need for upsizing the sewer main.
FY 18-19 City Operations and engineering provide an overall evaluation of condition and capacity. The condition of the pipe is fair and the additional capacity is needed were the results. Selection of an engineering consultant, Cardno Engineering, to start the design, summer 2019. City staff will coordinate possible project impacts with the Creekside Village complex.
FY19-20 Continue with the design and work towards final plans. Project went to Bid on June 10, 2020.
FY20-21 Award Contract and start of construction anticipated in August 2020. Substantial completion of sewer work on January 2021.

Project Justification

The Erickson trunk between SW Allen Blvd and SW 5th St is a 15-inch pipe constructed about 60 years ago along Erickson Creek. A portion of the pipe through the Creekside Village development was realigned in 1987. The 15-inch pipe is undersized for both existing and buildout conditions. Replacing this pipe in its current location would be difficult as it is in a heavily landscaped area adjacent to the creek with limited access and multifamily structures nearby. Pipe bursting is not feasible due to the extremely flat grade.

All the computerized flow models indicate that this line is deficient in size to handle future sewer flows. CWS installed flow monitoring on the trunk sewer to verify the need for this project. Data available in the spring of 2017 showed the pipe requires additional capacity. Positive results resulted in the decision to replace the pipe with a larger size. Cardno Engineering was selected to start the design summer of 2019.
